Hello,

I don't understand dutch so I can't really get much information out of this page. Hope some of you are willing to talk to me in english. πŸ™‚

The thing is, I am planning to buy good speakers for my room (18,5m²) and right now I am unsure what speakers to buy. I might build a pair of good Visaton speakers (Concorde, Vox or Atlantis) or buy the pair of Philips MFB 545 a friend of mine has.

1. How would you say do the MFB reproduce spacial impressions? The most important thing to me is that I can precisely say where a certain instrument is located on the "stage". Ideally, one would not be able to say there are speakers but rather real people playing real instruments.

2. Are there any current +passive+ speakers one could compare the MFB 545 to?

3. How would I be able to connect them to my Receiver? It doesn't have preouts and I would like to use the MFB's as front channels for my surround system.

4. I would be listening to them in nearfield conditions, i.e. 100-150cm away. Is that too close?

5. Are there any parts that need servicing? How do I know if something needs to be replaced?

The thing is, this friend of mine lives very, very far away so I can't go there to test/compare them to other speakers.

Hi Lethe,

The best thing to do is to listen to the speakers.
Borrow the 545's from your friend.
I wonder if you will be able to enjoy lower frequencies in a room that size,
( I guess 3 x 6 meters)

The low frequencies I cannot compare with any passive
speaker on the market today unless they are 4 times the size of the 545.
That would be a bit large for a 18 m2 room.

Taken the size of your room it may be a better idea to look for
an even smaller speaker like the 544 or even a 541.
It is not good practice to sit 1,5 m in front of the speaker.
The only way to get a good spacial impression so close is with
wideband speakers like electrostats.

The 545 has loudspeakers made with 30 year old technologie.
They have been optimized for flat response and point type radiation.
Stereo image and fase linearity where not a big issue in those
days but I wonder how they compare to modern day speakers
"optimized" for that.
The tweeter is its main problem.
But even dome tweeters you can buy today
have distortion problems when used at normal to high levels.

If you can compare them with modern speakers please keep us
informed.

Success

Where then, does your friend live? Near Holland? How much is he asking for those MFB 545's? Could he be persuaded to sell them? πŸ˜‰
